Hello Mrs. KA,
I'm new to Indian cooking but I've found that Kudam puli is sold as tamarind in the markets in the US. In a variation of the recipe that I have I use tamarind juice so that I don't have to grate the beans. It has a tart/bitter almost citrus taste to it. My recipe also calls for black mustard seeds sprinkled about and then I garnish with fresh cilantro.

I used to live with my malaylee husband in "Bombay" for 26 years. I often prepared a fish pickle with kudam puli and surmei fish. I have lost the recipe and do not know where to get the kudam puli and what equivalent fish would be available in Europe, where I live since my husbands death in 1983. Can you help : Kerala Cookery by Mrs. K.M. Mathew does not include this recipe. Thank you
