Recipe: Poha Chivda

Summary: Poha Chivda (or Chewda, chiwda) is a wonderful and healthy snack prepared from beaten rice flakes. It is a spicy snack usually prepared during Diwali and is famous among Maharashtrians.

Poha chivda is an easy to make recipe and it also has a great shelf life.

IngredientsPoha Chivda

  • Thin Poha/ Flattened rice flakes…… 500 gms
  • Mustard seeds… 1 tspn
  • Whole red chillies….. 3-4
  • Asafoetida…. 1/2 tspn
  • Turmeric Powder……. 1/2 tspn
  • Curry leaves…… 4-5 nos
  • Peanuts…… 1/2 cup
  • Chana Dal/ Split chick peas …….. 1/2 cup
  • Salt……. to taste
  • Sugar……. 1/2 tspn
  • Oil

Instructions

  1. Heat 3 tbspn oil in a pan.
  2. Add mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.
  3. Now add the curry leaves and whole red chillies.
  4. Add the peanuts and chana dal and fry for a while.
  5. Now add turmeric powder and asafoetida and mix well .
  6. Add the poha, salt and sugar and mix well.
  7. Fry for about 5-6 mins till the poha becomes crispy.
  8. Turn off heat and serve.
  9. Authentic Maharastrian Chivda/Chevda is also garnished with Raisins, and other dried fruits.
