Recipe: Cabbage thoran
Quick Glance: Cabbage thoran is a dry Keralite dish made of vegetables and grated coconut. It is a great accompaniment and is considered to be an important part of the “sadhya” (feast). “Thoran” means dry dish made of any vegetables of your choice. The main ingredient of a thoran consists of mustard seeds, curry leaves, turmeric and grated coconut. Here I have made thoran out of green cabbage. You can also make it out of red cabbage.
Ingredients
- Chopped Onions….. 1/2 cup
- Finely choppped Green chillies….. 3 nos
- Grated Ginger…..1 tspn
- Crushed Garlic ….. 2 cloves (optional)
- Turmeric Powder…. 1/2 tspn
- Mustard seeds…. 1/2 tspn
- Grated coconut…. 1 tbspn
- Few curry leaves
- Oil…. 1 tbspn
- Salt… to taste
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan.
- Add mustard seeds and let it splutter.
- Now add the curry leaves , onions, green chillies, ginger and garlic.
- Stir well till the onions change colour.
- Now add the turmeric powder and mix well.
- Add the chopped cabbage and mix well .
- Add salt.
- Put the lid on the pan and let it cook for about 7-8 mins.
- Add the grtaed coconut and mix well.
- Serve with rice as an accompaniment.
Other Methods
You can also add a cup of green peas and grated coconut to it. It enhances the taste and makes it colourful.
